The Ford Ka Hatchback: Performance, Ride and Handling
When it comes to engine performance with the Hatchback model in the Ford Ka range, there is choice of two engines – the 74bhp diesel 1.3-litre and the 67bhp 1.2-litre petrol engine and, in reality there is little to choose between them in terms of performance power. Both engines take approximately the same amount of time to reach a speed of 2mph, so no one is going to be tearing up the roads whichever engine they opt for. What these engines are ideally suitable for is practical urban driving, with the petrol engine being perhaps the more fun option – given its appetite for revs – but the diesel offers a greater degree of flexibility.
The chassis on the Ford Ka Hatchback is a modified, tweaked version of the one that can be found on the 500 manufactured by Fiat. However it is the changes Ford have made to areas such as the steering and suspension system that makes the Ford Ka Hatchback variant better for drivers. The car’s overall handling is very good, as it negotiates corners and turns nimbly and the steering offers great control and accuracy. The overall ride is much more smooth than you would normally expect to get from a small car and, although quite firm, is far more comfortable on road surfaces than the Fiat 500 that the Ford chassis was modelled on.

The noise level varies depending on whether you opt for the petrol or diesel engine, although neither could exactly be described as muted. The diesel provides a rather intrusive and sustained rumble, whatever the speed you are driving at, while the petrol engine only really makes a very loud noise if you are pushing its limit. There is also a considerable amount of wind noise audible from round the mirrors on the doors and the top of the windows at the sides which, combined with the noise level the car produces on poor road surfaces, makes for a less than perfect level of refinement.
